They want to get Gary the Honey man from Wesley Hill Market off to Cambodia to help defuse land mines. There are a lot of Vietnam vets working there for nothing to help diffuse a huge problem which will be there for 200 years to come. Kids are still getting their legs blown off and land use is still fairly hopeless even after all this time. There are many places where families and villages cannot sustain a livelihood for themselves because of the landmines that are still sitting there after all these years. They want to help Gary get over there and represent our community. The benefit is also to get the issue publicised. Once Gary is there, the Vietnam Association here in Australia seems to have money to sustain him once he is there but he has to pay his own way. There will be other bands involved and I will keep you posted as that takes shape.

Mamunya Photo Exhibition

Market Building Mostyn St Castlemaine

Friends of the Box-Ironbark Forests is holding an exhibition of photos highlighting the remarkable beauty of our local woodlands.

Photos have been selected from the gallery of the website of the Friends of the Box-Ironbark Forests www.fobif.org.au

The title of the exhibition emphasises that apparently modest scrub can reveal wonders when you look closely.

The exhibition continues a tradition the Friends started in 1999 with their first Mamunya festival. This word comes from a Dja Dja Wurrung chant, ‘pata, mamunya, jirarunga,’ meaning, ‘wait a while, don’t touch it, growing up.’ Goldfields woodlands were devastated in the nineteenth century, and their regeneration has been a long and remarkable story. This exhibition celebrates that regeneration.

The exhibition will finish at the end of October.
